I believe that the commerical aired during the theatrical release of movie King Kong starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange.

The voice over in the Ford commercial is done by John Erwin (who voiced over the years Reggie Mantle on Filmation's Archie shows and Morris the Cat in 9 Lives commercials)

Ford did another commercial featuring King Kong and their trucks back in the Sixties, where Kong was fighting against the truck, kind of like "King Kong vs. Godzilla". Near the end, Kong stands up and a thought balloon that said "Ford makes tough trucks!" appeared over his head, after which the truck knocked him over.

King Kong went on to design the explorer. ;')
