- According to state-run Amman radio, Jordan's King Hussein has placed his army under command of Iraqi leadership; he is a staunch supporter of Iraq in the Persian Gulf war that is in its sixth week
- Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini declares peace with Iraq "not acceptable" because of crimes they committed during Persian Gulf war, in comments broadcast over Tehran radio; Iraq reports new tank assault on northern and eastern approaches to Abadan, and fierce fighting reported in port city of Khorramshahr which is nine miles northwest of Abadan
- A drug runner who is part of a multi-million dollar Chicago heroin ring (among 23 such individuals) remains at large; more than 100 luxury items that were purchased with profits from such sales are also sought by police
- Roy Leonard reviews new Jill Clayburgh / Michael Douglas movie "It's My Turn"; clips from this film (including a scene where Ms. Clayburgh and Mr. Douglas are playing a game of ping-pong) are shown
In sports:
- Miami Dolphins lose to New York Jets 17-14
- Chicago Bulls host Milwaukee Bucks later this evening at Chicago Stadium (the Bucks won, 106-99)
- Chicago Blackhawks will be in Detroit playing against the Red Wings (they skated to a 2-2 tie)
- Ralph Houk is named new manager of Boston Red Sox
- Tal Smith is fired as president/general manager of Houston Astros, after they reached the playoffs (only to lose to the Philadelphia Phillies who ultimately won the World Series); he is to be replaced by former New York Yankees president Al Rosen
