Description: Here's Part 1 of an (incomplete) episode (missing about the first half-hour) of AM Chicago on WLS Channel 7. Includes:
Ending of PSA for American Heart Association - "We're Fighting for Your Life"
Co-host Sandi Freeman interviews author, "political observer," and syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune, Nicholas von Hoffman, who is on to promote his latest book, Make Believe Presidents: Illusions of Power from McKinley to Carter. (Mr. von Hoffman was one of the original "six personal points of view" that were heard on a daily 5-minute CBS Radio program called Spectrum that ran from 1970 to about 1992 and was heard in Chicago over WBBM Newsradio 78; the other original rotating voices were M. Stanton Evans, Jeffrey St. John, Jon K. Jessup, Stewart Alsop and Murray Kempton; in later years other voices such as Phyllis Schlafly, James J. Kilpatrick, Shana Alexander, Ellen Goodman and Joseph Sobran were added to the mix. In addition, he preceded Ms. Alexander as Mr. Kilpatrick's sparring partner in the "Point/Counterpoint" segments of 60 Minutes.) Ms. Freeman starts off by reading an excerpt from his book and then discusses various points of the book with him - including why the illusion of power is necessary and which of the presidents were "wacky" (he cites Richard Nixon, Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge among that list) - before signaling for a commercial with a shot of a ski show currently taking place.
Bumper (with shot of skiers on a runway) with caption: "AM Chicago - More to Come from the Ski Show"
Commercial: Fruit of the Loom Laundry Detergent - with split-screen testimonials from Helen White of San Diego, CA; Mary Mancl of Norwalk, CT; Anne Zidlek of Cleveland, OH; and Lynn Salton of Charlotte, NC - "Goes Beyond Cleaning to Caring - We Guarantee It"
