Description: Here's the first pledge break for Summerfest '79 on WTTW Channel 11. This segment features Cherie Mason and WCLR Radio personality Paul Brian. Includes:
Ending of segment with Jane Olivor, with voiceover (by ??) pledging a joint appearance by her and Charles Aznavour after the break
Summerfest '79 video bumper
First shot of this break consisting of Cherie holding up phone receiver and announcing phone number, and then showing examples of "thank you" gifts to contributing viewers (with voiceover by Don Ferris):
- A 1980 calendar with the Sneak Previews marquee on the cover (for $35)
- The book Crockett's Indoor Garden (for $60)
- "WTTW Chicago" sports bag (for $120)'
Paul then rejoins Cherie at a point where no phones are ringing, and laying on the guilt trip to get viewers to call (notice, throughout these breaks, the gallery of show titles on the wall in the background including Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, The Electric Company, Nova, Masterpiece Theatre, Soundstage, Sneak Previews, Sesame Street and Movie Eleven), and once again explaining how the viewers can pay for all what 11 puts on the air; around this point Cherie finally introduces herself and explains she's a subscriber "as we all are," and shows the "Premium" brochure folder which subscribers get after contributing $35 or more; another shot of the navy and white WTTW sports bag is shown; after which Cherie and Paul preview upcoming new programming on Channel 11 (a mix of shows originating from the station, outside acquisitions and PBS network offerings) including:
- New Soundstage episodes
- The American Film Theatre
- New films for Movie Eleven
- A new series on parenting called Look at Me, hosted by Phil Donahue
- John Callaway interviews
And, as Cherie emphasizes, 2/3 of which is all paid by viewers/subscribers. Paul then slips up by saying contributions support "this radio station," after which Cherie chimes in that "this is radio with pictures." She then opens this drive to pre-existing as well as new subscribers to contribute whatever they can to ensure all this programming can be seen on 11. After they make their final comments, a shot of the background wall with the numerous show titles hanging is shown, panning from left to right.
Funding notice for Summerfest '79 (voiceover by Paul Anthony) - notice the "this station and other public television stations" blurb which would much later be replaced by the "Viewers Like You" slogan; this is followed by the Summerfest '79 video bumper
