Description: Here's Part 2 of the first broadcast from WYCC Channel 20, which arose from the ashes of the previous occupant of that dial position, WXXW, which had left the air in 1974. Featured in this clip are Program Director Elynne Chaplik and Oscar Shabat, Chancellor of City Colleges of Chicago. Includes:
WYCC Program Director Elynne Chaplik (later Elynne Chaplik-Aleskow, the station's guiding light through the 1990's), welcomes people to the "new" Channel 20 with a profile on the City Colleges of Chicago and the services offered by the various colleges including Malcolm X College, Wright College (with a photo of Herbert C. Brown from Class of 1935), Kennedy-King College (named after Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, both assassinated in 1968), Harry S Truman College, and Olive-Harvey College (named in 1970 after two Vietnam War soldiers from the South Chicago area who were killed during the war, Milton Olive III and Carmel Bernon Harvey, Jr.).
In-between the Kennedy-King and Truman profiles, Elynne speaks with CCC Chancellor Shabat who was responsible for the naming of the station's call letters (in their early years, WYCC originated from the grounds of Daley College). He had come through the City Colleges in the Depression, and speaks of all those through all walks of life and backgrounds who have come through the system since; his vision for Channel 20 and to whom the station's programming will be geared (mainly towards low-income people and minorities), including ESL (English as a Second Language) and GED; and the confusion among some between City Colleges of Chicago and the Board of Education.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Tuesday, February 17th 1983.
