Here's an installment from Kidding Around, a Saturday kids' show that ran from 1978 to 1985 on WMAQ Channel 5.

The main host was Steve Smith (not to be confused with the Canadian comedian of the same name who is best known as outdoorsman Red Green on a long-running TV series, The Red Green Show), and his co-hostess here is Shawn Gourdie (who, at the time, was 13 years old and a seventh-grader at Sudling Junior High in Palatine; a Chicago Tribune piece on the prog...

WLS Channel 7 - Ending of Saturday Night Movie, Reflections and Station Sign-Off (1977)

Here's (as far as I'm aware) the earliest known (to date) sign-off sequence, from any channel, to turn up here. This one is from WLS Channel 7, found at the end of a Umatic videotape that was mostly recorded over with high school girls' gymnastics home movies from 1977 (boooooo!) and includes:

The ending moments of the Saturday Night Movie presentation (in glorious "pan-and-scan" and quite terrible color - it's not the recording - compare to how the commercials look!) o...

Here's the opening sequence for WBBM Channel 2's stab at a horror movie showcase, Fright Night.

This opening was created by Jim Talbot.

Jim recalls:
"I had designed and animated the wbbm station break for Hal Biard, who was head of promotion for channel 2. He liked it and asked me to do something for their fright night late night movie.

I was a one man operation back then (still am) working from the back porch of an editing compan...

Here's an reply to an editorial on HEW (Department of Health, Education and Welfare - predecessor to Health and Human Services, HHS)-mandated school integration policies, as aired on WLS Channel 7. Featuring Doris "Pixie" Galik, Treasurer of the Chicago Lawn Civic Association.

She maintains that Chicago has done everything it can to integrate its schools (to the point where, according to her, public schools have more black than white students), and rails against government-dic...

Here's a brief public service announcement from the Jewish Chautauqua Society, emphasizing how parents who took care of you when you were young, now need you to take care of them when they are elderly.

Voiceover by ?? (sounds almost like Norman Rose).

Star Wars Droid Factory by Kenner (Commercial, 1979)

Here's a commercial for the Star Wars Droid Factory by Kenner. A "non-canon" toy that was a bit of a rare oddity back then since there was no "droid factory" in the original movie. Notable for allowing you to make an R2-D2 that actually looks like R2 (more so than the actual action figure) since it includes Artoo's middle extendable leg.

Voiceover by Norman Rose.

This aired on local Kansas City TV on Saturday, December 29th 1979. (1977 Copyright, Twentiet...

WHEN Channel 5 - Channel 5 Morning Report with Mike Leiderman - "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (1971?)

Transferred direct from Quad 2" tape, and not from Chicago itself, but Chicago-related, as this features Mike Leiderman who would go on to become a fixture both in front of and behind the camera in Chicago television (mainly at WMAQ Channel 5 and WFLD Channel 32).

This was from the days when he was an anchor at CBS affiliate WHEN Channel 5 (now WTVH) in Syracuse, NY. It is one of the four-minute Channel 5 Morning Reports he anchored at 8:55am and 9:55am (ET). On this p...

Here's an excerpt from Son of Svengoolie on WFLD Channel 32, with the recording coming in somewhere after the start of a sketch called "Solid Mold" (a spoof of the syndicated series Solid Gold). Here, Rich Koz reprises his most famous parody - that of Mister Rogers, here singing some current hits of the day while accompanied on the piano by Doug Graves (Doug Scharf).

This clip comes in during the middle of Mister Rogers performing a version of Chicago's "Hard to ...
