WIIC Channel 11 - 6:30 News Roundup With Len Johnson (1962)
Exactly 56 years ago today (at 6:30 PM)!
Here's an incredible find - usually anything this old, if I am lucky to find it, is on a 16mm kinescope (remember, in 1962 Quad tape itself was only 6 years old). And even though it's from a Pittsburgh station, it has a very strong Chicago connection, as it is anchored by Len Johnson, whose voice (if not face) will no doubt be very recognizable to people who watched WGN in the 60s, 70s, and very early 80s. He was one of the ub...

Here's a promo for an upcoming fundraising auction on WTTW Channel 11, to be held from April 26th to May 2nd. Val Bettin, host of Channel 11's "The Storyteller" invites viewers to donate merchandise or services to be sold, and gives the phone number of the auction office to call to do so - 583-5000 (same one they have to this day!)
This promo (in glorious black-and-white) is preceded by a brief shot of a multiburst test pattern, accompanied by a 378 Hz tone.

WGN Channel 9 - Len Johnson and the News (Part 2, 1965)
Here's Part 2 (the final part) of an incredibly rare find - an edition of Len Johnson and the News on WGN Channel 9 from 1965! This was a forerunner to their overnight Night Beat newscast that ran from the late-sixties well into the 1980s.
You'll notice that this was during that awkward transition phase from black-and-white to color with most of the broadcast appearing in black-and-white, but then interspersed by random color commercials and a few color slides.

WREX Channel 13 - "The Circus" (Take 1, 1969)
Here's a (evidently lipsynced) performance from a band called "The Circus" - recorded at WREX Channel 13 in Rockford, IL. (not sure if this ever ran on or was intended to run on WCIU Channel 26 or not)
This came from the other Quad tape that I found in Jack Mulqueen's basement recently. (recorded in low band, according to the slate at the opening of this clip - as accompanied by an 800 Hz tone).
I was hoping this tape might have contained another episode of...
WTTW Channel 11 - "Mubembubershubip Ubappubeal" (1973)

Here's an appeal for membership on WTTW Channel 11 (from an original 2" quad master tape), with longtime staff announcer Marty Robinson speaking in the language associated with the TV series Zoom ("Ubbi Dubbi") - and his son Paul (shown in inset on the upper left side of the screen) translating for him.
Even the address is shown in "Zoom" language on the lower-third of the screen at first (set in Microgramma Bold Extended - or is that Mubicrubogrubammuba Bubold Ubextub...
TUMS Antacid - "For Acid Indigestion and Heartburn" (Commercial, 1965)
Here's a vintage commercial for TUMS antacid, with an animated man's acid indigestion and heartburn represented visually by such images as volcanic eruptions, lightning strikes, a distorted shot of midtown Manhattan from atop the Empire State Building (looking north towards West 42nd Street and 5th Avenue), stop-motion animation of dinosaurs fighting, building explosions, high tides, war zones and ships hit by turbulent seas - and after he takes a Tums, his relief is visually represented by s...

Here's a commercial for American Airlines, which starts off with a re-creation of a turn-of-the-century train robbery, then segues from that to the various sights of California including the dolphins of Marineland, San Francisco's Chinatown, night skyline, Mission Hill, cable cars, a pelican at the bay, Big Sur, and the infamous freeways. Ends with a shot of a four-engine Boeing 707 touching down as part of their "Royal Coachman" service.
