Shutan Camera - "Talk About Pictures" (Commercial, 1982)
Here's an extra-long Shutan Camera commercial which was used as sponsorship for "Talk About Pictures" - a show which aired Sundays at Noon on WMAQ Channel 5, hosted by George Fenneman. (He would sit at a table with a pro photographer and they would look at one of his/her photos and discuss the subject, technique, equipment, inspirations, etc.)
The lady in the ad is actress/model Jennifer Girard. She is now a very accomplished photographer in her own right. Check out her website here.
Bob Shutan, the man who owned Shutan Camera, has a new endeavor - he professionally transfers your old home movies to DVD as well as offering a number of other related services. Get'em transferred before they turn to dust! Check out his website here. (Of course, any old TV recordings you can send my way...)
And now, here's some of the history of Shutan Camera:
Back in 1918, Edwin Shutan opened Chicago Camera Co. Shortly thereafter he re-named it Shutan's, as many entrepreneurs of that era started using their last names in retail businesses. Later it was once again changed, this time to Shutan Camera. In the 1940s, brothers Melvin and Harold joined their dad in the family business. In the 1970s, Mel's sons Scott and Bob joined as did Harold's son Mark. Through the years, Shutan Camera had Chicago stores on Washington St., Wacker Dr., and Adams St. Their move to Randolph St. in the early 80s put them on the mail-order map! That's when they started their WGN TV ad campaign and came up with their now-memorable "shoot-with-the-best" jingle. In the 1990s they added a store in North suburban Highland Park. By 2000, all Chicago stores had closed and their main store was now located in Vernon Hills, IL. In July of 2008, after 90 Years of continuous family ownership and management, the last Shutan Camera in Vernon Hills was closed. Bob Shutan, the "last man standing", states that the reasons for closing were due to changes in the photographic industry and the economy. Bob's current endeavor - the service he was in charge of the last 20 years, is professionally transfering your old home movies and video tapes to DVD as well as other image preservation services. Get 'em transferred before they turn to dust! Check out Bob's website here.
Not sure when this aired exactly, but the date on the header card is Monday, June 14th 1982 - perhaps this was the date of filming. It's possible this aired on the next Sunday's show - Sunday, June 20th 1982.
