WLS Channel 7 - Eyewitness News - "Superfan Slims Down" (1980)
Here's Tim Weigel's sports report and the ending of the WLS Channel 7 Eyewitness News at 10pm. Includes stories on the Chicago Bulls "Superfan" (Jeff Platt) and his dramatic weight loss in an interview with "Big Al" Al Lerner. (I wonder if Platt was the inspiration for the SNL sketch about "The Superfans" featuring George Wendt, Chris Farley and Robert Smigel?) Other stories include Muhammed Ali stumping for President Jimmy Carter, and Mike Schmidt winning the MVP for the World Series.
Also features Joel Daly and Fahey Flynn at the end wrapping things up, with Steve Deshler and Chuck Goudie also coming out for one more on camera appearance. This is followed by a bumper promo for the 3:00 Movie's "An O'Hare Raising Experience Week" featuring the movie "Airport" on Thursday, October 30th 1980. (voiceover by Ernie Anderson and Wayne Atkinson at the very end)
Lastly we have a logo tag at the end - "Eyewitness News has been a presentation of WLS-TV Chicago" (with voiceover again by Wayne Atkinson)
"Our cameraman gives you the game as seen through the eyes of a midget..."
This aired on local Chicago TV on Tuesday, October 28th 1980.
