WFLD Channel 32 - The Best Of Chicago (Part 1, 1983)
Here's Part 1 of a neat special called The Best of Chicago on WFLD Channel 32.
It was produced and directed by the (late) multi-talented WFLD veteran Don Shannon, who graciously donated a copy to us. Don, whose name you have undoubtedly seen here before, was involved in producing and directing a variety of shows at WFLD spanning many decades. From Jerry G. Bishop's Svengoolie to PM Magazine and everything in between - Don saw it all.
Hosted by (the late) Norman Mark (who also co-produced it with Don), Best of Chicago purports to find just that - the "Best" of everything in the city, through an unscientific survey. A lot of this seems very reminiscent of the later Wild Chicago program, but you could probably say that about a lot of shows.
Part 1 brings us the best omlet (or omelette) in the city - at Sarkis' Cafe - 2632 Gross Point Road in Evanston - owned by the very entertaining Sarkis Tashjian. Next, they enlist the help of everyday Chicagoans to find the best pizza in town. Then, it's off to Capt'n Nemo's Submarine Sandwiches at 7367 North Clark featuring Co-owner and "Captain" Lou Ragusi - followed by Yo-Ho's Potato Chips at 4716 West Armitage Avenue featuring President, P. Scott Saranecki and Plant Manager Jerry Segretti. Then, free food in The Pump Room at the Ambassador East Hotel - followed by seafood at The Half Shell at 676 West Diversey. Next, it's the best coffee at Dunkin' Donuts in the Northwestern Station terminal featuring owner Lee Klaus - followed by the best ice cream parlor - Gertie's at 5858 South Kedzie, featuring Bob Yasutas the manager.
"Gimme two Padonka!!"
This aired on local Chicago TV Wednesday March 30, 1983 during the 7pm to 7:30pm timeframe. (it was also re-run on Sunday, April 3rd 1983 from 6:30-7pm).
