Here's a (mostly complete) segment from an airing of PM Magazine Chicago about the annual "Mighty Mud Mania" event in Scottsdale, Arizona, which began as an advertising opportunity from the Johnson Wax company, but grew into something bigger. (do they still hold the event any more? Seems like kids nowadays wouldn't want to get this dirty - or their parents wouldn't want them to)
