WMAQ Channel 5 - NewsCenter5 - "The Crash of Flight 191 - The Day After" (Part 2, 1979)
Here's more coverage of the crash of American Airlines Flight 191 at O'Hare Field, the worst air disaster in U.S. history; this is Part 2 (the last part) of a special edition of NewsCenter5 with Mike Jackson and Carol Marin from the day after the crash. Featuring Lynne Scott, Barry Kaufman, Stephen Ray, Jim Tilmon and Bonnie DeVries. Includes:
Mike Jackson describes the grim task county medical examiners have in identifying the bodies pulled from the wreckage of Flight 191, leading into a report by Lynne Scott about such challenges ahead, multiplied by the fact that there was very little left of the casualties, even their teeth. Footage of the previous day's recoveries are shown, as are excerpts of a news conference given by Cook County Medical Examiner, Dr. Robert Stein.
Carol Marin introduces a report by Barry Kaufman about the work of forensic dentists on cases like this, and the challenges of other major cases. Another clip from Dr. Stein's press conference is shown during the course of Barry's report. Among those called on to identify the remains of dead passengers are forensic dentists from Northwestern and Loyola Dental School, as well as those who worked on such cases as the August 12th 1978 Vulcan bomber plane crash at Glenview, IL and the 1977 Canary Islands plane crash, and Chicago area orthodontist Dr. Edward Pavlik who also was part of the Cook County ME's dental team and worked on identifying victims of John Wayne Gacy.
Carol then announces the special report will return after a break (commercials deleted).
Mike introduces a report from Stephen Ray about the guarding of the crash site by FBI agents and state police to keep gawkers and hangers-on away, but some have ambled on near the site anyway. Shots of reporters from around the world (including one from Japan) are shown. Cook County Sheriff Richard Elrod is interviewed.
Mike speaks again with Jim Tilmon, who says that safety regulations are not really an issue and that if assigned to take a cockpit he would do so without hesitation.
Carol introduces the final story of this special edition - a report from Bonnie DeVries who interviewed Wanda Horan of Munster, IN, who was booked onto the doomed flight, but on the advice of a travel agent switched to another flight and saved not only $11.00 but also her own life.
Carol then closes this special edition, advising that more coverage will come on the 10pm edition, and says good night for Mike, Jim Tilmon and the rest of the news team.
