ABC Network - World News Tonight - "The Crash of Flight 191" (Part 2 - Non-Crash News, 1979)
Here's Part 2 of a complete edition (with commercials) of ABC's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings in London and Max Robinson in Washington (Frank Reynolds was on vacation), from the day of the worst air disaster in U.S. history, the crash of American Airlines Flight 191 just outside Chicago's O'Hare Airport. This segment has other news of the day. Featuring Charles Gibson, Al Dale, and Tim O'Brien. Includes:
Max Robinson introduces a story on the execution of John Spenkelink in Florida, leading in to a report from Charles Gibson on protests outside the prison from anti-capital punishment activists. Featuring sound bites from prison warden D.H. Brierton and Spenkelink's sister, Carol Meyers; also seen is former Attorney General Ramsey Clark. This in turn leads to another report on the execution itself by Al Dale in Starke, FL, with sketches by Don Pottratz and featuring clips of a press conference from Spenkelink's pastor, Rev. Tom Feamster. Following this report is a news analysis from Tim O'Brien in New York about the timeline from Spenkelink's conviction to his execution (Florida Supreme Court - 4 times; U.S. Supreme Court - 4 times; lower courts - 9 times; conviction to execution - 5 1/2 years).
Max teases a report on the latest inflation figures from the government before the next commercial break.
