Here's Part 5 of the Twentieth Annual Chicago Emmy Awards on WBBM Channel 2, hosted by Bob Newhart.
This part features Johnny Morris, Hector Perez, Jim Tilmon, Ruth Graham, Warner Saunders, Frank Jackson, John Coughlin and Lee Phillip, archive footage of Frank Reynolds, Irv Kupcinet, Dorothy Vredenburgh, Jerry Colonna, Howard K. Smith, John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon, and photos of Fahey Flynn, P.J. Hoff, Bruce Roberts, Harry Porterfield, Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson.
Mr. Perez won in the category of "Outstanding Achievements for Informational Programming: Single Public Affairs Program Not Included in a Series" [4(B)] for Mexico Vibra En Chicago on WCIU Channel 26 which he produced (the show's host, Patricia Urbano, who also won in that category for the said series, did not attend). A clip of this show, presented by Sociedad Civica Mexicana de Chicago, Inc. (voiceover in Spanish by Ms. Urbano), is then aired.
Mr. Saunders and producer Mr. Jackson won in the category of "Outstanding Achievements for Informational Programming: For a Conversation Program Series" [4(C)] for Common Ground on WBBM Channel 2. A clip of this program, with Mr. Saunders interviewing guest Dinah Shore (whose daily Dinah! talk show aired on WBBM at the time), is then shown.
Mr. Newhart then introduces a retrospective at the 25-year history of WBBM, recounting the station's personalities of 20 years ago (Fahey Flynn, Frank Reynolds, John Harrington, P.J. Hoff and Lee Phillip) and CBS network shows (I Love Lucy, Gunsmoke and The Ed Sullivan Show); this leads into a piece by John Coughlin who starts out standing outside the Wrigley Building which was WBBM Radio 780's old home, and Ms. Phillip outside their then-current studios at 630 North McClurg Court, panning to a shot of the John Hancock Building which houses WBBM's transmitter. Vintage clips of Frank Reynolds, Irv Kupcinet (with guests Dorothy Vredenburgh, Democratic National Committee secretary, and comic Jerry Colonna), Ms. Phillip, Mr. Coughlin (as host of In the Bag, with voiceover by Bruce Roberts), and the first of the 1960 "Great Debates" between Presidential candidates John F. Kennedy (D) and Richard M. Nixon (R), with Howard K. Smith as moderator, are shown; as are vintage photos of such past and/or then-present WBBM personalities as Fahey Flynn, weatherman P.J. Hoff, Bruce Roberts, Harry Porterfield, Mr. Morris, Walter Jacobson, and Bill Kurtis.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Monday, June 5th 1978 during the 8:30pm to 10:30pm timeframe. (the show ran over the allotted 2 hours - not sure how much though)
