Here's Part 12 (the last part - whew!) of the Twentieth Annual Chicago Emmy Awards on WBBM Channel 2, hosted by Bob Newhart.

This part features "Big" Al Meltzer, Mary Gonzalez, Scott Craig, longtime WMAQ Channel 5 staff announcer Ed Grennan and Carl Ebert, and featuring footage with the voice of Greg Gumbel.

Mr. Craig won in the category of "Outstanding Achievements for Sports Programs: For a Single Program Covering Sports Events or Based on Sports Theme" [8(A)] for Going Up Easy, Coming Down Hard on WBBM Channel 2, which he produced. A clip of this program, spotlighting the hoop dreams of young basketball players (and accompanied by The Impressions' "We're a Winner"), is then shown.

Mr. Grennan, Mr. Gumbel (who did not attend) and Mr. Ebert won in the category of "Outstanding Achievements for Sports Programs: For a Series Covering Sports Events" [8(B)] as co-hosts and producer, respectively, of High School Football on WMAQ Channel 5. A clip of the St. Rita vs. Lane Tech high school football championship game is then shown; notice the 28-line height size Vidifont typeface based on Rudi Bass' "CBS News 36" at the start of the clip, as used for the title. In the middle of this clip, the tape cuts out.

Note: The last two awards of the evening - for "Outstanding Editorial and Commentary Achievements: Editorial Achievement" [9(A)] (won by Dillon Smith of WMAQ Channel 5 for WMAQ-TV Editorials) and "Outstanding Editorial and Commentary Achievements: Commentary Achievement" [9(B)] (won by Walter Jacobson of WBBM Channel 2 for Perspectives) - are regrettably not included here. It is also not known which of the other Chicago stations had retrospectives in the last moments of this awards show, but it is likely it would have been WGN Channel 9.

This aired on local Chicago TV on Monday, June 5th 1978 during the 8:30pm to 10:30pm timeframe. (the show ran over the allotted 2 hours - not sure how much though)
