Here's the opening moments and first commercial break of The Late Movie presentation of the Marx Brothers' first feature, "The Cocoanuts" (1929), on WGN Channel 9. This screening marked the last time WGN aired a Marx Brothers movie on New Year's Day. Includes:

WGN Station ID - with Bob Vorwald of WGN's sports department wishing everybody a happy holiday season (background music: "Deck the Halls" by Mannheim Steamroller)

The Late Movie CGI open with space motif

Promo for At the Movies with Rex Reed and Bill Harris, previewing their look at the "Dogs of 1986" - the worst movies of the year - for Saturday, January 3rd at 6:30pm (main voiceover by Al Parker)

Commercial offer for LS-912 Ultrasonic "Bug-Away" - "A Safe, Clean, Odor-Free Way of Ridding Your Home of Bugs and Pests" - ultrasonic sound can also be heard by hamsters, gerbils and mice (main voiceover by ??) (ending voiceover by ??)

Promo for A Salute to Cary Grant, for New Year's Day at 1pm - features clips from such Grant films as "That Touch of Mink," "Monkey Business," "Indiscreet," "An Affair to Remember," "To Catch a Thief," and "Father Goose" - set to "The Way We Were" by Barbra Streisand (vocal take from same-titled LP on Columbia KC 32801, 1974) (ending voiceover by ??)

"A MCA tv Release" insignia and fanfare, followed by opening titles for "The Cocoanuts" (it would appear this airing was from a 35mm print, rather than the 16mm prints run in prior years)

This aired on local Chicago TV early Thursday, January 1st 1987 at 3:00am.
