- Preview of tonight's debate between Presidential candidates Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, to be held in Cleveland starting at 8:30pm (and will be nationally televised); predictions that debate's outcome could swing undecided voters one way or another, or cause those who'd already made their minds to switch

- Parliamentary debates in Tehran on fate of U.S. hostages to carry on for several more days; no meeting today because of Muslim holiday, but they will convene the next day

- Saudi Arabia breaks diplomatic relations with Libya over that country's disapproval of American AWACS planes in desert kingdom; Libyan dictator Qaddafi declared planes' presence "tantamount to American intervention"

- According to state-run Amman radio, Jordan's King Hussein has placed his army under command of Iraqi leadership; he is a staunch supporter of Iraq in the Persian Gulf war that is in its sixth week

- Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini declares peace with Iraq "not acceptable" because of crimes they committed during Persian Gulf war, in comments broadcast over Tehran radio; Iraq reports new tank assault on northern and eastern approaches to Abadan, and fierce fighting reported in port city of Khorramshahr which is nine miles northwest of Abadan

- A drug runner who is part of a multi-million dollar Chicago heroin ring (among 23 such individuals) remains at large; more than 100 luxury items that were purchased with profits from such sales are also sought by police

- Roy Leonard reviews new Jill Clayburgh / Michael Douglas movie "It's My Turn"; clips from this film (including a scene where Ms. Clayburgh and Mr. Douglas are playing a game of ping-pong) are shown

In sports:

- Miami Dolphins lose to New York Jets 17-14

- Chicago Bulls host Milwaukee Bucks later this evening at Chicago Stadium (the Bucks won, 106-99)

- Chicago Blackhawks will be in Detroit playing against the Red Wings (they skated to a 2-2 tie)

- Ralph Houk is named new manager of Boston Red Sox

- Tal Smith is fired as president/general manager of Houston Astros, after they reached the playoffs (only to lose to the Philadelphia Phillies who ultimately won the World Series); he is to be replaced by former New York Yankees president Al Rosen
