KMBC Channel 9 - Sunday, Nuclear Sunday: Kansas City Reacts (Part 4, 1983)
Here's Part 4 (the last part) of the live, special discussion program Sunday, Nuclear Sunday: Kansas City Reacts on KMBC Channel 9 in Kansas City, MO. This show, which aired right after the ABC telefilm The Day After, was hosted by Larry Moore (formerly of WLS Channel 7).
In this part, Larry fields questions from people who called into the show. The first question read is from Robert Berry of Kansas City, KS, who has a two-part query for Carsten Haaland, one asking whether he meant we could survive a nuclear war, the other asking about what would happen after people left their shelters. After Mr. Haaland speaks, Dr. Paul Ehrlich rebuts him. Next, Larry reads a question from Alice Martinez of Kansas City for Dr. Ehrlich about whether any part of the U.S. was safe after a nuclear attack, and he and Mr. Haaland have a back-and-forth on this issue. The next question Larry reads is from Jim Ryan of Kansas City about who would be shot if the Soviets took over this country; Mr. Haaland gives his analysis, followed by Dr. Ehrlich giving his two cents' worth. Jeff Reid (sp?) of Kansas City then asks another question dealing with the chances of surviving a nuclear attack; the answer to that question is supplied by FEMA's Patrick Breheny. Larry then signals the end of the program by mentioning the progress of the Lawrence and Kansas City candlelight peace vigils, KMBC's preparation of reports for reaction to The Day After for airing on the 10pm news, followed by a special Nightline discussion relating to the mini-series and Walt Bodine's reporting the results of a poll relating to the aftereffects.
