WCIX Channel 6 - Snipets - "The Granola Chef" (1984)

Here's another (partial) rare Snipets segment! These originally were created by and aired on the Kaiser Broadcasting / Field Communications stations such as WFLD Channel 32, in the 70s and early 80s. However, with the sale and dissolution of Field starting in 1982, for whatever reason Snipets segments popped up on a few other non-Field or former-Field stations, even as late as 1986!

This particular airing came from a non-Field station, WCIX Channel 6 (now WFOR Channel 4) in Miami - Fort Lauderdale, FL. I'll bet the people that made the decision to run these knew that Field was out of business by this point and figured that these were essentially in the public domain. They probably needed some cheap PSA-type filler and thus turned to Der Schnipets. I wonder where they got the tapes of them though?

In this segment (which is missing the first 10 seconds), a young girl (Kelly Brod) shows how to make granola. The ingredients and procedures for making granola are shown on the screen in lower thirds (set in Vidifont 28) as she describes what goes in it and how it's prepared. At the end, it dissolves to a station ID slide with drawings of four children, and a voiceover (by ??) advising, "From your friends at WCIX" (which was put in place of the "Produced by Field Communications" notice that was kept for the Field stations' airings).

This segment was recycled into (or from?) Way to Go! and Way to Go Special! - other Field productions for kids. Also, the same girl, Kelly Brod, could be seen showing how to make alfalfa sprouts in yet another Way to Go! segment. Last but not least, rounding out the Kelly Brod trivia, we see in the credits for The Reluctant Robot (another fine Field production) that someone named "Kellee Brod" played "Alien #1". Same girl or a relative? Inquiring minds that are bored want to know. ;-)

"It's easy to make!"

This aired on local Miami / Fort Lauderdale TV on the morning of Sunday, Februrary 5th 1984. (Not from Chicago, but still an important part of SnipetsHistory)
