WBBM Channel 2 - The 1980 Chicago Emmy Awards - "Sven Wins" (1980)

Here's an excerpt from the 1980 Chicago Emmy Awards which aired on WBBM Channel 2. This pertained to Category #7(B), Entertainment Programs: For A Series, with the nominees read by WSNS Channel 44 announcer Linda Frost (!) and WBBM's own Walter Jacobson, which were:

- Una Cita Con Palomo - Jose F. Abarca, Host; Bruce Shuster, Producer - WCIU Channel 26

- Rock Of Ages - Frank Chambers (our very own Telefrank), Producer; Isabel Joseph Johnson, Host - WCIU Channel 26

- Windy City Alive - Brian Roland, Producer - WCFC Channel 38

- Son of Svengoolie - Rich Koz, Host / Performer; Joseph Oher, Producer - WFLD Channel 32

- Image Union - Tom Weinberg, Kenneth Solarz, Producers - WTTW Channel 11

And the winner . . . Son of Svengoolie, with host/performer Rich Koz (too bad they couldn't pronounce his name right) taking home his first Emmy Award. (Was that WFLD's Naurice Roberts sitting next to Rich in the audience and going nuts after he won? Hard to tell but it looks a bit like her. Pretty funny. :-) )

After getting up to the podium, Mr. Koz says a few words, starting off with mentioning that Joe Oher was in New York "on a fact-finding mission" to see if Tom Snyder and Rula Lenska were one and the same, thanking the Channel 32 crew, and hoping the Emmy statuette didn't look so much like Gloria Vanderbilt.

Besides serving as producer, Joe also deserves credit for being instrumental in the first couple years of the show. For example, he came up with the idea for the first Son of Svengoolie T-shirt [the red one with a picture of Sven on it and the "dripping blood" logo]. That logo, by the way, was created by WFLD Art Director Cathy Mustari. :-) )

After his thanks, an excerpt of the "MisteRobber's Neighborhood" sketch (originally aired on February 23rd 1980) is shown.

"I have to have the suit back to Rod Serling by midnight, so I've gotta hurry up."
