- Mayor Byrne says the city will buy two-way radios for all city firemen, to improve communication and avert other accidents such as this
- No serious injuries after an eastbound freight train (Northwestern) runs into support beams while traveling under the Wells Street Bridge at Merchandise Mart around 7:15pm; that section blocked off to all traffic and CTA service on Ravenswood line rerouted; more details in a report from John Quinones, with interviews with Harold Geissenheimer, General Operations Manager of CTA and John Donovan, Commissioner of Department of Streets and Sanitation

- Congressional Democrats want equal time to answer President Reagan's upcoming talk to the nation on Thursday (the 24th) at 8pm Central time (to be carried by Channel 2, live) about his latest budget cut proposals
Commercial: 1981 Toyota Trucks - "Cook Up a Deal" year-end offer (voiceover by ??)
Commercial: Kool-Aid Brand Soft Drink Mix - "You Loved It As a Kid - You Trust It As a Mother" - (C) 1981 General Foods Corporation

Bob then reads an item about an indictment of a South Side man, Harry Miller of 9705 South Hoxie Avenue by a Cook County grand jury for the rape of a woman who was picking up her car at a parking garage at 506 North Rush Street; he is midway through this item when the tape runs out. (As this link notes, the alleged assailant's name was actually Jerry Miller, who ultimately served 26 years for this crime; he would later sue the city and retired police officers after DNA tests were inconclusive about whether or not he was the culprit in the crime, but his suit and appeals were summarily rejected as per this page.)
This aired on local Chicago TV early Wednesday, September 23rd 1981 at 1:15am.
