Here's a neat superVintage clip - the first three minutes of the Channel 5 10pm News from 1972! Includes:

Station ID with voiceover "This is WMAQ-TV, Chicago" by ??

Opening to the News 5 Chicago Night Report "with Floyd Kalber, Harry Volkman, Johnny Morris, and Len O'Connor" (voiceover by ??)

Floyd Kalber reports on the proposed 1973 Chicago School Budget and cuts and layoffs deemed necessary by Chicago Public Schools Superintendent James Redmond

Floyd then reports on the continuing Gage Park High School controversy and truce, involving race relations in general and boycotts of the school by white students. Featuring Irene Schrader, Gage Park High School PTA President (and head of the Gage Park Coalition), as well as comments by Joseph Lodato, of the Gage Park Civic Association, and the Reverend Willie Barrow of Operation PUSH.

Finally, Floyd reports on a school shooting in Pontiac, Michigan, in which a 16-year-old high school student shot and seriously wounded a student during a quarrel, with the rest being hurt as innocent bystanders.

    Partial Commercial: Miracle White (incomplete)

    [recording cuts out]

This aired on local Chicago TV on Monday, November 27th 1972 at 10:00pm!

News 5 Chicago. Hmmm. Seemed at the time to have been a trend within some NBC stations. As early as 1971-72 sister station WNBC Channel 4 in New York was branding its newscasts as News 4 New York (most successfully used during 1980-95 and again the last few years), and a few years before this newscast WRC Channel 4 in Washington, DC used the News 4 Washington nomenclature.

Incidentally, the typeface used for the newscast name, graphics, and lower-third supers was Charter Oak. As well, the projection of graphics at frame right (to Mr. Kalber's left) appears to have been from a system called Vizmo.

I wonder, based on the pic quality, was this either an early half-inch color reel-to-reel, or an early 3/4" U-matic?

The size of the website address seems bigger in this clip than some of the others. :-P

Tweaked the description a tad smidgen, as the organization Rev. Willie Barrow was a member of, was an acronym: PUSH = People United to Save Humanity.

@Fuzzy: Half-inch color. Thought so. Had to be one or the other.

@Smctopia: I noticed this too on the more recent clips on this site. Must be a trend.
